Hire a gentle cycling bike 1 December - 29 February from the main street in Nelson city and take the weight off your feet while you explore. You will find our sunflower bike rack near the church steps in Trafalgar St every day except Sunday, weather permitting. Just walk across the street to our booking agent, where you will be given the lock combination number and your helmet and you can choose one of our maps for a memorable cycling day. We can also deliver a hire bike to your inner city accommodation

Nelson has a growing network of cycleways. Our gentle cycling maps illustrate routes combining cycleway and street cycling (avoiding the busiest streets)
- City Gardens Ride (10.6km)
Ride to 9 public gardens and finish at a friendly café. The route includes a NZ bush walk, Victorian and Woodland gardens, a Japanese garden and Chinese garden. You can visit the historic Founders Heritage Park and if you are keen, take the track up to the beautiful old Wakapuaka Cemetery, with the best view across the harbour to the Abel Tasman National Park. -
City History Ride (9.6km)
Ride the prettiest streets, visit 22 historic sites and finish at a quirky kiwi café. This route leads you to sites which have been identified with illustrated information panels, so you can read about each one as you go. It includes Trafalgar Square, 3 heritage precincts, Founders Heritage Park, Wakapuaka Cemetery, Botanical Reserve (the site of NZ’s first rugby game), the Centre of NZ Park, and 2 public historic houses. -
River Ride (6.4km)
Ride to the leafy Maitai river for a swim, or just to enjoy the peaceful riverside setting. Follow the riverside cycleway, explore the Centre of NZ Park and the site of NZ’s first rugby game. The route includes the city art gallery (The Suter) with its fabulous café. An easy, flat ride. -
Tahunanui Beach Ride (11.6km)
Ride to the Tahunanui Beach recreation area for a swim or a walk. Beach activities also include a hydro slide, Natureland Zoo, The Beach Café (with tables under the trees for lunch or coffee), and minigolf. The long white beach is very safe for swimming, and popular with visitors and locals alike. Stop along the way for fish and chips or a seafood café meal on the waterfront. This route is recommended for confident cyclists only as it involves some riding on a state highway.
